Nightlife in Hvar

July 10th, 2010

Nightlife in Hvar has recently become richer for one more great place to go to. So, I just wanted to inform all of you that famous Veneranda Club has once again opened it`s doors for everybody that want`s to have a fantastic “night out”. Here are some historical facts about it: the place was built in 1561 for soldiers of the Venetian Republic. In modern times the site has been used as an ideally located meteorological lab directly above the town of Hvar. Today, it`s lively all-night disco, where almost 80% of visitors come around 2am. Someone once said, that nobody needs directions on how to find it, because you just have to follow the people and you`ll arrive there : ). But, anyway, it`s on the way to hotel Amfora, 5-10 minutes from town`s main square.

Of course, you have to spend evening somewhere else before going to Veneranda, so Carpe Diem Club is the place to visit. It`s easy to find it as it is just opposite the place where catamaran comes.

There is also Nautica Bar/Nightclub,  Hotel Adriana`s Nightclub on the fourth floor. In each of those, you`ll be able to choose from a wide range of drinks and cocktails.  Both of them are on the other end of Hvar`s port (looking from catamaran).

As always, I really hope you`ll have a great time in Hvar, and this time it`s for “night time”.

Sincerely yours

Day trips to small islands called “Pakleni otoci”

June 21st, 2010

During summer season you can really enjoy all the benefits of spending your vacation in Hvar town.

There are regular taxi boat tours to small islands near Hvar town. That group of islands is called “Pakleni otoci” and it’s hard to translate it to English, because literally it means “Hell’s islands”. And, the meaning of that translation is  far from the truth, as they are the most beautiful small islands you can go to.

Untouched nature, clear blue sea, … what more does a person need for a perfect and relaxed holiday. I have already written about each of them in a blog “lagoons and resorts” and now I’ll give you a timetable of taxi boats to make it easier for you to make plans:

  • Palmizana: tours from Hvar town start from 12:00 pm till 12:30 pm, and boats come to pick you up and take you back to Hvar at 4:00 pm; 5:00 pm
  • Zdrilca and Mlini beach: tours from Hvar town start from 10:00 am till 1:00 pm, and boats come to pick you up and take you back to Hvar at 4:00 pm; 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm
  • Milna: tour from Hvar town starts at 10:00 am and boats come to pick you up and take you back to Hvar at 5:00 pm
  • Jerolim: tours from Hvar town start from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm, and boats come to pick you up and take you back to Hvar at 4:00 pm; 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm

I hope this information will help you when you come to Hvar and if you decide to go on some of these places, I know you’ll have a great time.

“Paprenjak” and “Hvar’s flower”

June 4th, 2010

“Paprenjak” or”Peppery biscuit” and “Hvar’s flower” are traditional biscuits made in Croatia and of course on the island of  Hvar. The origin of Paprenjak is unclear but is know to have existed in the 16th century during the Renaissance period. Traditionally in older times Croatian people made Paprenjak throughout the year, and more lately its a family tradition in many homes to make Paprenjak for Christmas.

These biscuits take many shapes, some as gingerbread men, stars, trees, and some use a wooden press mould to emboss a pattern on the biscuit.

There is still a secret around ingredients that are used to make them and it makes these biscuits even more peculiar. The secret about some ingredients is jealously kept confidential and carried over from generation to generation until the present day.

But, here is the recipe that I have found in Stari Grad on Hvar island.

Ingredients:

  • 1 L of honey
  • 1 L of oil
  • 1 L of sherry
  • flour as needed
  • clove powder
  • cinnamon powder
  • vanilla
  • teaspoon of saffron
  • 1/6 teaspoon of black pepper

Preparation:

Knead dough and roll out to approximately 1 cm thick. Cut out shapes are placed to tin and baked in preheated oven at moderate temperature (200 degrees) for 15 minutes.

The main ingredient of these biscuits is the saffron, which along with honey and coriander was a very important product of the island in the 16th century.

“Hvar’s flower” is a biscuit flavored with anise. They are traditionally made for weddings and other festive occasions.

I hope some of you will find it intriguing enough to try to make these biscuits by yourselves and that way bring some of Hvar’s taste and smell into your own homes.

And, if you are coming to Hvar, try to find some lovely, original home made biscuits to buy and enjoy them.

Authentic Mediterranean dish “Gregada”

May 24th, 2010

Gregada is the simplest, and by some, one of the oldest food which was prepared by fishermen.

There are different ways of cooking it, but here’s one you’ll most likely find in any restaurant in Hvar town:

„Gregada“ from Hvar island

ingredients for 6 persons :

  • 1 kg of fresh fish (grouper, gilt poll, or sea bass)
  • 0,5 kg of shrimps
  • 1 kg of seashells
  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 0,5 kg onion
  • bunch of parsley
  • 0,2 l olive oil
  • see salt
  • peppercorns
  • 1 l water

How to make it:

First, we clean the fish. Potatoes and onion must be cut into slices.

In a wide pot,we first put potatoes and onion, and then fish and shrimps on top of it.

Add salt, peppercorns, parsley, olive oil and pour water.

It has to be cooked for 20 minutes and it’s ready to serve.

The best wine to have with this great dish is light white wine made on the island, for example “Zlatan otok Zavala”.

Lavender and Rosemary

April 28th, 2010

Hvar has always been known for it’s production of lavender and rosemary oil. Lavender and rosemary are mentioned in documents from the 1781. and 1784. Annual production of lavender on Hvar island at that time was about 80 barrels.

The name comes from Latin : lavandula. There are maybe 40 different types of lavender. Therefore, not every lavender oil is the same. Some are more used as analgesic oil, some to keep those moths away from your clothes, the other as a  secret ingredient for your favorite cream or perfume.

This one, made on Hvar island is mostly used as analgesic oil in various therapeutic massage treatments. You can safely use it after work out, but anyway, it’s always best to check with your doctor first.

People might say that lavender oil is expensive, but this is justified by fact that you need to collect a huge sack of lavender flowers to produce a single liter of this famous oil. Lavender blooms in June and July and it’s purple flowers are harvested very early in the morning. After that, there is a lot of hard work involved, until the final product is brought to us as the buyers.

If you come and visit Hvar island, try to find another fine product, a genuine honey made of lavender, rosemary, heather and other herbs which is very aromatic and curing.

Rosemary grows in big branched bushes, blooms in spring and it’s flowers are small and kind of bluish.

Historical monuments in Hvar town today

April 11th, 2010

I spent my Easter hollidays in Hvar town. It was great to see that lots of local people and tourists awakened it after it’s winters sleep. Once again, the old, familar things became new and exciting.

For all of you who will spend your vacation at our apartments, the first thing you’ll see on your walk from the house is the Franciscan Monastery and Church.

In it’s museum and  premises you can see some of the most valuable works of art, such as Renaissance relief “Madonna with Child“, made by Niccolo Fiorentino. Hvar’s poet and humanist Hanibal Lucić is buried in front of the main altar. In the  garden, there is a 300 years old Cypress which is protected as a monument of park architecture.

Next is the Arsenal Building, built in 13 century. When you first see it, you immediately know that you are looking at something special. It is one of the most important buildings of naval architecture of its kind on the Mediterranean.

In the summer, you will usually find local artist doing portraits of anyone who wants to.

On it’s first floor, in 1612. the Hvar’s Theatre was built. It is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest public theater in the world.

It’s well preserved interior – the stage and the auditorium with boxes, dates from 1803.

Two unique, well preserved wall scenography designs still adorn stage’s back wall.
From the founding of the Theatre, through almost 400 years of its existence, it was the centre of cultural and social events of the Town and of the Commune.

When you climb up the stairs, you can take lovely photos of square, the park, …

Town square is without a doubt a place where everything happens. Here, people meet for a morning coffee, see local manifestations, even watch famous football games on wide screen together. It was paved in 1780. g.

Everyone has to feel great when spending time just sitting in town’s park, watching small boats coming in and out of the port, seagulls in their attempt to find something to eat. You can even buy some jewelry or local souvenirs made from lavander at nearby stands.

One of the buildings that reminds us of the turbulent times in the past is the Hvar fortress (fortica or citadel). It was built in the early 16 century and now, among other things, it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the town and the islands. From the fort to the town square there are walls that were built during the Middle Ages.

The St. Stephen in Hvar was built on the foundations of an early Christian church from the 6th c. The family Hektorovic altar has the icon „Madonna with Child“ from the thirteenth century, one of the oldest in Dalmatia.

Town’s well was built in 1529. Can you imagine, back in the old days, everybody had to come here to take fresh water for drinking.

Jerolim, my favorite place

March 20th, 2010

There are many beautiful beaches and places to relax on the Hvar island. But, of course, everybody has a favorite one. Mine is a small island called St. Jerolim.  While waiting for a taxi boat to take me there I am always drinking my morning coffee in a cafe on Hvar town promenade. Nearby, there is a local pastry where I usually buy all sorts of baked goods. Then I’m ready for a pleasant boat ride that lasts only 15 minutes. It is obvious at first sight that the coast of the island of St. Jerolim is predominantly rocky. I have walked around the whole island looking for that perfect spot. So, to spare you from doing the same, I can tell you a little secret. After you get off the boat, just walk across the island through the pine trees. You will pass by a small family cafe where you can have coffee, soft drinks, rent deck chairs and umbrellas. Then, you’ll discover a true lagoon like the ones you see on the movies.

This is just a part of it. I hope you will find it tempting enough to come and see the whole lagoon and then be able to tell me if you share the same  enthusiasm for it as I do.

Lagoons and beautiful resorts

March 20th, 2010

Most famous lagoons are located on the south side of the island and can be reached by car, bicycle, or walks. You can enjoy in crystal clear sea and pebble beaches and at the same time smell the scent of lavander fields.

The Mekicevica bay is on the south side on the island Hvar. You can get there by boat or easy, relaxing walk from the bay Pokonji dol as it is about two kilometers away from the center of the Hvar town.

Milna is a typical Mediterranean town situated on the southern coast of the island of Hvar, 4 km from the town of Hvar. You can swim and sunbathe at four spacious sandy beaches (Vela Mirna, Mala Milna, Velo Borce and Malo Borce).

A large pebble beach and breathtaking underwater world is waiting in the bay of Dubovica, located 8 km east of Hvar. The bay is dominated by the summer residence of the Kasandric family dating back to the period from the 17th to the 19th century.

The most popular beaches of the Hvar town are located on the group of  small islands, called Pakleni Islands. The largest one is St. Klement where you can visit Palmizana and Vlaka. Both locations can be accessed by the organised, regular boat connection from the port of Hvar town.

Palmizana is the oldest and most famous Hvar’s resort and the nautical marina. It  is a spacious lagoon with shallow and sandy beach,  surrounded by the thick, pine forest, fragrant heather and rosemary bushes and various exotic plants. In the bay of Vinogradisce the family of the botanist Eugen Meneghello began to build summer houses and also to plant trees. Today, it is a fascinating arboretum with tourist facilities.

Vlaka is a traditional resort on Pakleni Islands. Once a roman villa, later a village dedicated to St. Clement. Today it is a destination to everyone who, among other things, wishes to experience plebeian festivity on St. Clement’s day, celebrated on the last Sunday in July.

If you would like to visit the island of Jerolim (named after a 15th-century church which has since disappeared), boat runs several times a day from Hvar harbor. Boats are leaving at about every half hour or so from 9am-1pm, returning at half hour intervals between 4pm and 6pm. Same goes for Stipanska.

Stipanska is the first place where taxi boats stop. This beach, located on the island of Marinkovac, part of Paklina archipelago, is reserved for naturists, equipped with showers and a shop.

Taxi boats are usually waiting just opposite the Theater of the Hvar Town.
