I spent my Easter hollidays in Hvar town. It was great to see that lots of local people and tourists awakened it after it’s winters sleep. Once again, the old, familar things became new and exciting.
For all of you who will spend your vacation at our apartments, the first thing you’ll see on your walk from the house is the Franciscan Monastery and Church.

In it’s museum and premises you can see some of the most valuable works of art, such as Renaissance relief “Madonna with Child“, made by Niccolo Fiorentino. Hvar’s poet and humanist Hanibal Lucić is buried in front of the main altar. In the garden, there is a 300 years old Cypress which is protected as a monument of park architecture.
Next is the Arsenal Building, built in 13 century. When you first see it, you immediately know that you are looking at something special. It is one of the most important buildings of naval architecture of its kind on the Mediterranean.
In the summer, you will usually find local artist doing portraits of anyone who wants to.

On it’s first floor, in 1612. the Hvar’s Theatre was built. It is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest public theater in the world.
It’s well preserved interior – the stage and the auditorium with boxes, dates from 1803.
Two unique, well preserved wall scenography designs still adorn stage’s back wall.
From the founding of the Theatre, through almost 400 years of its existence, it was the centre of cultural and social events of the Town and of the Commune.

When you climb up the stairs, you can take lovely photos of square, the park, …
Town square is without a doubt a place where everything happens. Here, people meet for a morning coffee, see local manifestations, even watch famous football games on wide screen together. It was paved in 1780. g.

Everyone has to feel great when spending time just sitting in town’s park, watching small boats coming in and out of the port, seagulls in their attempt to find something to eat. You can even buy some jewelry or local souvenirs made from lavander at nearby stands.

One of the buildings that reminds us of the turbulent times in the past is the Hvar fortress (fortica or citadel). It was built in the early 16 century and now, among other things, it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the town and the islands. From the fort to the town square there are walls that were built during the Middle Ages.

The St. Stephen in Hvar was built on the foundations of an early Christian church from the 6th c. The family Hektorovic altar has the icon „Madonna with Child“ from the thirteenth century, one of the oldest in Dalmatia.

Town’s well was built in 1529. Can you imagine, back in the old days, everybody had to come here to take fresh water for drinking.
